Cooking Adventures

(Written April 4th)

As far as farm internships go, we are pretty spoiled when it comes to our accommodations. Many farm apprenticeship programs yes, provide housing, but in bunks or individual huts where electricity, running water, indoor toilets, large beds etc. are not provided. We are lucky to have such luxuries. Tonight, though we had a bit of a shock when our electric stove/oven stopped working. Hamilton and I were planning a great dinner, and turned all of the burners on the stove on. The stove did not like this and promptly stopped working just as we had our water on to boil and veggies in the pan. At first, we had no idea what to do and searched around for the breaker box, unplugged and re-plugged the stove in several times and called Betsey, who was probably already in bed.

Finally it dawned on us, we were already using a wooden stove to warm the house. PLUS we both had camping stoves that would work just fine! So while Hamilton threw together his cooking stoves, I loaded the wood stove up to get it hot enough to cook with. We made a great dinner! Hamilton found some wild nettle in the field and used his processor (that plug in still worked) to make a great pesto. We boiled some pasta on his camping stove, and threw the castiron on the wooden stove with garlic, onions, broccolini, potatoes (all from the farm), asparagus, and mushrooms. Once it was finished we added it all together to make the best meal we have had yet. It got both of us excited for camping this summer!

I know it might not seem like much to you, but it was delicious, and I was excited and proud of our meal :) Now with a full belly, I am going to bed to be well rested for a full day of weeding ahead!
